7 Things I'm Doing to Grow My Blog + Free Traffic Booster Cheat Sheet

February 22, 2017

It's officially been a year since I relaunched my blog as In Search of Sheila! You can read more about why I changed my name and what my old name was (which is so cringe-worthy) here. To celebrate my 1 year blogiversary I wanted to share 7 things I'm currently doing to help grow my blog even more. Stay tuned to the end to get your free printable cheat sheet with 5 EASY and actionable steps to start driving traffic to your blog right after you read this post!

I don't believe that bloggers should keep secrets from each other and we should share all the knowledge we have to help each other out. This very post itself is inspired by Helene in Between's 5 Things I Did That Exploded My Blog. Helene doesn't hold back her expertise and is always sharing the best advice. I highly recommend following her blog if you're looking for great blogging advice and tools. Now, on to the 7 things I'm doing RIGHT NOW to grow my blog:

1. WORKING ON BLOG GOALS
First of all, it's important to set some goals for your blog. Narrowing down where your blog is in the present and where you want it to be 6 months to a year from now is essential, so you can pinpoint the areas you need to focus on improving. My overall goal is to start monetizing from blogging (there I said it!) There's NO shame in wanting to make money from your blog. Just don't let it consume you to the point that you lose your authenticity. My overall purpose for In Search of Sheila is to post content that I enjoy creating, but also inspires and helps others while also making some money from it.

2. FOLLOWING A BLOG STRATEGY
Once I figured out what I wanted to achieve (monetization) I was able to develop a game plan to put my goal into action. In order to start monetizing from my blog, the number 1 thing I need right now is also what I'm struggling with the most: more page views. So right now I'm putting my focus on creating content people will want to read and implementing strategies that will drive traffic to my blog (see my cheat sheet at the end to find easy ways to drive traffic!)

3. LEARNING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
I spend my free time and lunch breaks gathering as much information as I can on growing a successful blog. I started to curate a virtual library of blogging resources and tools in addition to jotting ideas and notes down on paper. This gives me a place to reference when I'm stumped for ideas or not sure how to execute something new. I also participate in webinars, Facebook discussions, subscribe to email lists, enroll in e-courses, and download workbooks + cheat sheets. There is always something new to learn!

4. INCREASING MY PRESENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
I've promoted my blog posts on Instagram and Twitter for a while now where I get most of my traffic and recently upped my game on Pinterest and Facebook. Making yourself known on different social media platforms is a great way to increase traffic to your blog!

5. PAYING ATTENTION TO GOOGLE ANALYTICS
If you don't have Google Analytics installed on your blog DO IT NOW! Seeing a thorough run-down of your stats will help you optimize your content and attract the right audience.

6. BEING ACTIVE IN FACEBOOK GROUPS
I never realized the power of Facebook groups until I joined them! Basically it's a group of like-minded bloggers who want to help each other. There are many blogger groups out there that apply to all niches. Some of my favorite groups are The Blogging Squad, Boost Your Blog, GirlBoss Bloggers, and The Blog Loft.

7. MAINTAINING AN EMAIL LIST
Creating an email list is a sure-fire way to create lasting connections with your readers and is a great way to boost traffic to your site. I literally created one two weeks ago and am still learning the ropes. I'm planning to create more printable cheat sheets, work books, and even some free e-courses, so stay tuned!

And those are the 7 things I'm doing RIGHT NOW to help grow my blog. Clearly I'm still learning new strategies, but I'm optimistic about where my blog will be another year from now. Growing your blog to reach its full potential is hard work, but it's a journey I'm willing to take to reach my dreams.

I hope this post offered some valuable tips and resources and I'd love to hear what you're doing to grow your blog down in the comments! Naturally, I want to know EVERYTHING, so don't hesitate to share! Make sure to grab your freebie down below and start driving that traffic to your blog!

  3. I was so glad to come across this blog post! I am also trying to get a hold on my blog, which I have only recently self hosted, and I'm attempting some of the things you mention here. I'm still very unclear about monetization, analytics and so forth. I've been focusing on getting a bigger presence on social media, but I worry that if I'm not putting in the time in other places, it may not do any good. UGH! Lol, thank you for sharing! I'm bookmarking and sharing this as well!

  9. Please write a blog post of how you promote your blog on Instagram and Twitter. I have a pretty good following on Instagram, but those two are my lowest sources of traffic.
