Surprise!!! After having this blog for 3 years, I finally found a name that reflects what I want this blog to represent: In Search of Sheila. I took a little break from my regular posting to give this space a makeover and a new focus. My blog will still focus on fashion, but it will also be a place for me to share lifestyle content and blogging tips. My overall goal is to encourage my readers (YOU!) to be in search of what inspires them to be a confident and driven woman.
My Old Name
My original blog name was "Split Needles" and was the name of a song by The Shins that I randomly picked when I created this platform in 2009. Back then this blog existed as a place that I showcased my photography--aka no one knew it existed. In 2013 I wanted to make a fashion blog and just starting sharing outfits to the same platform. As time went by I gained a following and was met with the problem of having a blog name that made absolutely no sense in relation to the content I was creating. I've always cringed at the name and avoided mentioning it on my Instagram or Twitter--I would always just say, "on the blog!"
Finding a New Name
For a while now I have been trying to think of a new name, but always drew a blank, became frustrated, and gave up. I took serious action and actually sat down with a girl friend, pen and paper, and started searching for inspiration. From this leg work, the name "Sincerely Sheila" stuck out as my initial favorite, yet, it wasn't very original. A few other bloggers I came across include the same closing word with their name and I just wanted something creative. I also wanted my name to encompass what my blog means to me and what I want it to translate to my readers.
The Moment When I Knew
One night I sat down to continue brainstorming and the word "explore" came to mind. I consider myself an inquisitive and curious person and I love exploring places, ideas, subjects, etc. (I also really loves maps and geography!) So I googled "explore synonym" and the word "search" popped up. For some reason I instantly thought of "in search of..." and obviously put my name on the end of it. I instantly texted Erin with my excitement, and she (and my boyfriend) liked it! The saying goes, when you know, you just know, right? Well in that moment, I knew it was the one.
How To Choose The Right Blog Name
1. Figure Out Your Focus or Brand
Some might call this step "finding your niche," but you don't have to have one to be successful. You just have to find a focus and build your brand around that. Having one large focus instead of a niche will allow you to have umbrella areas that still fit your blog. For instance, since my main focus is to encourage my readers to be in search of what inspires them to be confident and driven, I can still send that message to them by posting about fashion, lifestyle, and blogging tips.
2. Consider Your Audience
You want people to see your blog URL or banner and be instantly drawn to it, so your name needs to connect to your potential audience, but also be a reflection of you and your focus/brand.
3. Have a Brainstorming Session
Take a couple hours by yourself or with a girl friend and turn on some music, drink you favorite beverage, and be ready to get inspired. Gather some magazines, books, or pop open Pinterest and grab a notebook and pen and write down anything that comes to mind. Ask yourself: what are my interests? What do I want to write about? What do I want my blog to translate to my readers? going through word list after word list, writing down anything that struck us as having potential. We even began texting each other words we came across or thought up when we weren't together! I was really determined to think of something.
4. Ask Your Friends For Help
Ask your friends or parents to describe you in three words. You might be surpirsed what they come up with and it can definitely get the juices flowing in your mind
5. Use Adjective Lists + Word Generators
Find some lists of adjectives on Google and jot down whatever connects with you, whether it describes you or what you want your content to be about. Word generators are also great to put together different combinations from your word list. Wordoid is a good place to start.
6. Study Other Blogs
No, I don't mean go and copy someone else's blog name. Researching other blogs will light a spark and point you in the right direction. Also read their side bar and about me page to get a sense of what they're blog is all about to help inspire you.
7. Write Down ALL Possible Names
Look at your list of words and write down every combination that comes to mind! Even if it sounded awesome in your head and then turns out to be a total miss it will lead you to the RIGHT ONE.
8. Make It Memorable and Catchy
This is where you gotta think about your audience. Your name needs to be catchy, so people don't forget about it when they go to type it into their browser. You also want it to be easy to type, easy to say, and not too long. Alliterations, descriptive words, and simply your name are great options.
9. Test It Out
When you find your top contenders try formatting in different fonts and layouts to see what it looks like. Say it out loud to see if it flows. Create a test banner for your page. Visualizing, saying, and hearing your new name will definitely help.
10. Just Go With It!
When you know, you know. Go with your gut feeling and don't second-guess your choice, especially if you plan on buying a domain name. If it fits your focus/brand, reflects you, and fits the criteria for being memorable, you have a winner.
